Socio-Economic Panel

Living in Germany – What influences human behavior in general, economic decisions in detail, and mechanisms of social change embedded in the household context, the neighborhood, and different institutional settings as well as policy regimes?

GeRDI Research Community Socio-Economic PanelThe German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) is a research-driven infrastructure unit located at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin). It serves the international scientific community by providing nationally representative longitudinal data (the SOEP study) and related datasets on private households in Germany.

GeRDI Research Community: Socio-Economic Panel - Gephic of People in GermanyThe SOEP study offers microdata for research in a wide range of disciplines: the social, economic and behavioral sciences, including sociology, demography, psychology, public health, political science, and contemporary history, but also the life sciences and medicine. The data provide information on objective living conditions, values, willingness to take risks, current social changes, and the relationships and interdependencies among all these areas. The data are used not only for basicacademic research but also for social policy reports.

“As a research data centre, we provide a wide range of longitudinally oriented microdata for researchers in Germany and abroad. Currently, our data are mainly used in research with a social and economic science background. An overarching infrastructure such as GeRDI spanning multiple research data centres allows us to be found and used by scientists from other disciplines.”
Prof. Dr. Jürgen Schupp, Professor of Sociology, Freie Universität (FU) Berlin,
Vice-Director of Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP) at German Institute for Economic Research  (DIW Berlin)

In identifying the requirements for GeRDI from the perspective of social sciences, the SOEP community cooperates with us as a research community and in the role of a data provider.
